FAQ

  • Endometrial ablation is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat abnormally heavy menstrual bleeding. It involves precisely treating the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) to reduce or stop the menstrual flow while keeping the uterus intact.

  • You may be a candidate if your periods are life-disrupting—such as soaking through protection every hour or bleeding that lasts longer than eight days. It is generally recommended for women who have finished having children and have not found relief through hormonal medications.

  • Dr. Homsi performs this as an outpatient procedure that requires no surgical incisions. A slender device is inserted through the cervix to deliver controlled energy, such as heat or radiofrequency, to the uterine lining. The treatment itself is very brief, often taking only a few minutes.

  • Most patients can resume their normal daily activities within one to three days. Some patients experience mild cramping for a short period or a watery discharge for a few weeks as the uterine lining heals.

  • While the primary goal is to significantly reduce menstrual flow to normal or light levels, results vary by patient. Approximately 90–95% of patients report a major reduction in bleeding, and many stop having periods entirely.

  • Pregnancy is highly unlikely after this procedure, but it can be dangerous if it occurs because the uterine lining has been treated. Because this is not a sterilization procedure, women should continue to use a reliable form of birth control until they reach menopause.
